1 . Descriptions:

 

The Parshall Flume is a hydraulic structure used to measure flow in open channels, enabling accurate flow measurement through specific geometries and hydraulic conditions. Its operating principle is based on hydrodynamics, where the flow is accelerated in the flume by its specific geometry and then decelerated after passing through a throat section, forming a stable water surface profile. By measuring the difference in water level before and after the throat section, the flow rate of the water can be calculated.

When water enters the inlet section of the flume, it is initially accelerated. As it passes through the narrow throat section, the flow is further accelerated, creating a specific water level difference. After this, the water enters the diffusion section, where it decelerates and returns to a regular flow rate. The water level difference measured before and after the throat section allows for the calculation of the flow rate using known geometric relationships and formulas.

The Parshall Flume is essential in both wastewater treatment systems and pure water treatment systems.
